If you follow us on social media, you’ll hear us talking about cuttlefish casting a lot. It’s a technique that we absolutely love here at Fitzgerald Jewellers especially when it comes to reusing your inherited jewellery to make something new. We use the cuttlefish bone that washes up on the shores of the Kentish Coast. Their soft inner shell lends itself to carving out a negative space to cast jewellery from whilst the rigid outer bone keeps the structure tight to withstand the heat of molten metal. Many hundreds of years ago, cuttlefish was used as an inexpensive way of creating a near perfect cast. Today, we embrace the unique texture every cuttlefish bone gives you.
